Antifreeze Sprinkler System

Antifreeze sprinkler system overview

An antifreeze sprinkler system keeps wet-pipe sprinkler systems running in any kind of weather. Wet-pipe sprinkler systems are simple, cost-effective and reliable. However, they will not function when in freezing temperatures. Frozen water can also damage pipes. One option  is a dry-pipe system. Another work-around is a wet-pipe system with an antifreeze loop. The anti-freeze system uses an inert liquid such as glycerin to keep the water in the pipes above the freezing point. The antifreeze system keeps water flowing even under harsh conditions. An “antifreeze loop” is a section of a large wet-pipe system that has been treated with antifreeze.

The technology

Wet-pipe sprinkler systems are the best for most sites. They are simple and cost-effective. However, they will not function in freezing weather.

Dry-pipe systems are one option for areas where sprinkler pipes are at risk of freezing. Another alternative is a standard wet-pipe system with an add-on antifreeze system. The antifreeze sprinkler system keeps the water in the pipes in a liquid state even when temperatures drop. A check valve separates between the antifreeze loop section of the sprinkler and the main part. The system uses an anti-freeze agent to the pipes to prevent freezing. Common antifreeze agents include propylene glycol, glycerin, and ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is a toxin and may not be used in systems that connect to city water supplies. Glycerin cannot used in CPVC plastic pipes.

An antifreeze sprinkler system can be complex to setup. It must be done by an expert to ensure the right balance of antifreeze and water. Also, the mixture must be uniform through the entire antifreeze loop.

Applications

Antifreeze help keep wet-pipe sprinkler systems flowing under freezing conditions. They are preferred where the advantages of a wet-pipe system outweigh the complexity of the antifreeze loop. They may be used anywhere a wet-pipe system is used.
